A Beginner's Guide to Eco-Fashion with Organic Basics

Sustainable and ethical fashion is rising in popularity with consumers becoming more aware of the ethical issues involved with clothing production and the long term impact of disposable-fashion on our shared planet. Fast-fashion can be a vicious cycle with prices becoming lower on the high street and online sales becoming cheaper by the day. However, we must take a moment to reflect on the true cost of fast-fashion and try our best to shop more consciously and responsibly as consumers. Slow (sustainable and ethical) fashion can seem like a daunting lifestyle change to undertake but if we all make small, incremental changes collectively this can add up to great results. Read on for simple beginner tips on how to shop more consciously in 2019 and beyond.

What is ethical fashion?

According to the Victoria and Albert Museum ethical fashion is an umbrella term to describe ethical fashion design, production, retail and purchasing. It covers a range of issues such as working conditions, human rights, exploitation, fair trade, sustainable production, the environment and animal welfare and rights.

 Begin with the basics

Making the change to slower sustainable fashion brands can seem daunting and overwhelming at first. Personally, a lot of items in my wardrobe consist of fast fashion brands, however there are many vintage items too. As I become more educated on the topic of sustainability I will make the effort to seek out durable high quality clothes in the future that will be re-worn again and again and buy from ethical companies where possible. To begin with sustainable fashion a great tip is to invest in the basics. Organic Basics is a Danish brand that makes beautiful basics such as t-shirts, socks and underwear from organic cotton. Each piece is  consciously created and designed to last.
